As part of the peace negotiations underway in Lausanne, a treaty was signed between Turkey and Greece on January 30, 1923, and as part of the peace and nation-building process, the first forced population exchange in history was decided.
The Turkish-Greek Population Exchange, which, with some exceptions, involved the forced relocation of Muslim Turks residing in Greece and Greek Orthodox Christians residing in Turkey, was not limited to the two signatory countries. This practice had multifaceted economic, political, social, and diplomatic impacts regionally and globally, with consequences that extend to the present day….
